I ADORE hats!

Happy October everyone!

Maybe it's because I've been watching a lot of "period dramas" the last few weeks but I've been thinking a lot about hats...women's especially...and wondering when (and WHY) we stopped wearing them!

One of the thing that amazes me about hats is how endless the variety it! Colors, styles, feathers, materials! I wish we'd start wearing them again!

I suppose there's nothing really stopping any of us from wearing them so why don't we? Do I have the "nerve" or the "confidence" or the HUZTSPA???

Oh well they are sooooooooooo much fun!

Here are some of my fav hats from years past that I've owned. Some I still have, some have been transformed into other works of art and some have been sold. (single tear.....)

These first few photos are of vintage hats I've purchased and re-made....either by cleaning, adding a new band and/or feathers, flowers or whatever strikes me as FUN! Don't you just LOVE the first hat?!?!?! I sold that one right before Easter of this year. The little bird is wearing an antique drawer pull "hat"!

These next ones are my steampunk hats! I bought some GORGEOUS handmade black wool hats (not cheap by the way) and had a great time making top hats for the steampunk crowd! The first photo is how they look before I "have my way" with them!

The next photo shows a hat I made for a wedding! Doesn't he look great??!??!

Just a few more steampunk hats that I had a great time with! (yes that IS a vintage leather belt!)

The next photos are all one hat BUT the customer requested 3 different feathers that would tuck down inside the band for different looks! Which one do you like best! (I LOVE them all but am partial to the pheasant feather!)

These last hats are hats I made from standard hat forms...most of them are mini top hats...which I love...and are held in place with two clips.

Working with Resin Part III

Hey everybody!
Hopefully you've been enjoying learning a little about working with resin!

Today I'm going to talk a little about layering and adding trinkets!

It's so much fun to layer your piece or add charms and treasures inside your piece!

Here are some pieces I've done this with! I'll take them one by one and explain how I ended up with the finished product!

The above piece started with a vintage house number! I prepared the "collage" of the darling little girl as before (see post from June 8th and June 9th).On this particular piece I glued a tiny porcelain 3-d rose to her hair using E-6000 OR mod podge. You only have to "tack" it in because once the resin dries it won't be going anywhere!

I also painted a little "necklace" using gold acrylic paint and a toothpick making sure it was very dry before I poured the resin.

The little cuckoo clock charm was also snuggled down into the curve of the bottom of the O and if I remember correctly I clipped of the bottom part of the charm and filed it a bit so that it would fit better into the curve. It doesn't have to fit perfectly because the resin will fill in and hide some of the imperfections.

Here's the order in which I prepared this piece.

cut a cardstock backing
using mod podge added a little vintage text
cut out vintage photo and mod podged it on top of the text (cardstock is underneath)
painted her "necklace"
MOUNTED IT INTO THE VINTAGE HOUSE NUMBER
gave the entire thing 2-3 coats of mod podge
THEN added the porcelain rose and the clock charm

Next just mix and pour your resin. (see previous posts)

When you use 3-d objects you need to pay just a little more attention to how you fill the piece. If I can I like to completely encase the charms or trinkets OR at least make sure you coat the entire surface of the trinket with resin. As it settles and dries the image might stick up from the resin just a bit BUT there is still a coating of resin on the entire trinket.

You can get into trouble by not knowing where to allow your resin to go. If you don't cover the entire trinket with it, part of it will be shiny and the other part won't and might look different than you intended. This one was shallow enough AND the trinket was enclosed inside the bezel in a way that I could pour resin over the entire thing and just let the resin go where it wanted to. I hope that makes sense!

Next is an example of 3-d objects added BUT I was careful to only let the resin go up to the edges of the trinket AND NOT ON IT. Look at the photos below and we'll talk a bit about it afterwards!

For this piece I prepared the background as instructed in the above post I and II.

After I made sure the image was sealed with 2 coats of mod podge AND very dry I glued on the crown and the "royal" metal piece that I got from an antique typewriter!

When I poured the resin I was very careful to ONLY let the resin go up to the edges of the typewriter piece and the inside edge of the bezel. Notice that if I had let the resin encase the crown and or the typewriter piece it would have run over the sides. You just have to take each piece as it comes and let the design help you decide what to do! I use a toothpick to guide the resin where I want it to go AND be careful to only put very small amounts in as I go.

LAYERING

Layering is also so much fun and can give your piece even more of a 3-D look. Below is an example of layering:

For this ring I layered my trinkets and parts in between layers of resin!

I fitted the ring with my paper images as instructed in previous posts. Then carefully glued in some tiny watch parts and charms and let that dry. I mixed and poured my resin making sure to only fill the bezel about half full.

I let this dry completely and then glued more trinkets and then filled it up to the top encasing everything.

*******When you first begin it's probably best to let the entire piece dry first BEFORE you pour your 2nd coat of resin. HOWEVER after I got the hang of working with resin I ended up placing the 2nd layer of trinkets into the resin WHEN it was fairly hard BUT still sticky. It's tricky but if you're impatient like me you'll probably end up trying that!

The resin doesn't need to be COMPLETELY dry before you put in your 2nd coat but again...get the hang of it first and then experiment!

Well I think that's enough for today!

Working with Resin Part II

Hope you enjoyed the (long) tutorial yesterday about working with resin!

Here's a little more info!

You can actually use items that have holes in them or are open backed. I'm sure there's a "right" way to do this BUT this is the way I do it and it seems to work.

If you're working with a paper image, mount your image on a piece of fairly heavy cardstock and trim it to the same size as your image. Then as you glue just leave this as your base so that you will have a fairly heavy backing.

**Note...if your image is warped after using mod podge on it just gently bend it back into shape. The mod podge makes it flexible and easy to straighten.

When everything is completely dry I mount my image inside whatever I'm using as a bezel and "tack" it in with a few beads of E-6000. Depending on the piece you might be able to mount it right into the bezel OR you might have to place it on the back side of whatever you're using if it has a lip on the back to mount to. You just have to sort of take each container as they come and be inventive!

The when that's fully dry I fill in any seams, cracks or holes in the back with E-6000 and let that dry. Sometimes it tries to seep thru and you want to make sure you keep the glue in the back only!

Then when you're SURE there aren't any openings in the back just make sure you give your image another good coat of mod podge paying special attention to the outside rim of your image where resin can seep through. (See yesterday's post for complete instructions for using resin)

If the back looks unsightly I just cut a piece to fit on the back from some pretty paper or vintage text and mod podge it on!

Below are a few different things I've used in this way.

Working with resin!

Hey everyone~!

Working with resin can be sooo much fun! The resin magnifies the image underneath it for a cool effect! Because this post is fairly long I'll intersperse some photos between sections but will put more at the end so I don't interrupt the lesson! (:

I am FAR from being an expert BUT I have learned a few things about working with resin which I'll share in the hopes that others will share their tips too! If you've found an easier or better way to do any of this PLEASE let me know!

I'll share the basics today and then tomorrow some variations etc!

You will need:
bezel (ring base, brooch base, bottlecap etc.)
paper image
2 part resin
plastic cups w/ measurements on the side
popsicle sticks
toothpicks
FLAT pan or FLAT container
timer
rubber gloves
paper towels
foil or plastic work area
fingernail polish remover or acetone
matches or small blow torch

Today we'll just deal with one paper image on the bottom of your bezel, filled with resin.

First cut out your paper image, dry fitting it to make sure it fits perfectly into your bezel. Then using mod podge or another collage medium coat the inside of the bezel and the back side of the image. Watered down Elmer's glue works fine!

Place the image inside the bezel smoothing it with your fingers or a small paintbrush until it's flat. With your paintbrush clean up any beads of glue and after that's dry give it at least 2 coats more to make sure the image is sealed. If you don't make sure all the sides are sealed, the resin will seep in ruining the image. If you're using ink jet images just give the first coat a quick swipe or you will blur the image. the 2nd coat won't matter as much. It will look white but will dry clear.

You can add other things on top of your image....charms, jewels, watch parts etc. but I'll talk more about that tomorrow!

When the paper image inside your bezel is completely dry prepare your resin.

In my opinion the best resin to use is this:

Ice Resin

Someone told me that Rio Grande's resin is the exact same thing but I don't know...never tried it. If you have another brand don't worry.....they are all basically the same....Ice Resin is a just a little clearer.

I've also used the next two products with good success.

Rio Grande's Resin

EnviroTex Lite

I work under a light that gets pretty warm because it helps the bubbles dissipate. It also helps if the bottles have been slightly warmed under warm water for a few minutes. Sometimes I forget this step so it's optional.

Wearing rubber gloves and using a cup with measurements on it, pour the EXACT same amount of each of the 2 compounds together. (ie one ounce of the first compound, then another ounce of the second compound making exactly 2 oz) Stir it gently with a popsicle stick....as gently as you can....sort of folding it....not whipping it up. The harder you whip it the more bubbles there will be. Set your timer for 2 minutes and make sure you scrape the sides and bottom to incorporate it all together.

I think it's always best to have several pieces to fill because it goes sooo much further than you think it will!

After mixing it for 2 minutes pour it into another CLEAN container and with a CLEAN popsicle stick gently stir it again for another 2 min. I haven't always done the 2nd mixing BUT if you don't mix it properly and there's some of either compound that isn't mixed it will ruin the whole batch. (I've never ruined a batch that way though...knock on wood!)

After the 2nd mixing leave it in it's container under a light or somewhere warm and leave it alone for 5 minutes. This will help the bubbles to dissipate on their own. Be sure to set your timer!

IMPORTANT NOTE:
MAKE sure you have your pieces on a flat surface that you KNOW will not be disturbed for 24 hours OR a flat moveable container WHEN you pour because you will NOT want to move the pieces separately after you've filled them! Sometimes I use a sturdy piece of cardboard that I cover with foil or plastic.

**********NOTE BEFORE YOU START MAKE SURE THAT YOUR PIECE IS ALSO LAYING FLAT! Sometimes I used popsicle stick or toothpicks to prop pieces up so they will be laying flat. Sometimes I nestle it onto an old towel or cloth that I don't care about...whatever works to keep the piece completely flat.

Have a layer (or 2) of foil under your pieces, (in the flat pan or flat moveable surface) then CAREFULLY pour the resin into your bezel. Sometimes I even use the popsicle stick and sort of "spoon it in". Especially if it's a tiny area. Some people use clean ketchup containers. If the area to fill is especially tiny OR I need to just put a tiny bit more in I use my toothpick and just put a "toothpick full" in. You might need to guide it into the crevices with your toothpick. Continue filling each piece until you are done. The resin dries so slowly that you can come back and put a bit more in if you wish.

Here's an example of earrings that only needed a couple of toothpicks full!

Now you need to get rid of the bubbles. There are several way to get rid of bubbles.

1) Some people who do a lot of pieces at one time use a small blow torch (the small kind chefs use for creme' brule) and just whisk the flame quickly over their pieces and the bubbles should pop. If they don't you can try and pop them with a toothpick but be careful not to let it run over.

2) You can also (not recommended but of course I don't pay any attention to that!) Take a big deep breath making sure your face is AWAY from the resin and then EXHALE on the piece. Most of the bubbles should leave. The problem with this method is that I always forget and take a big deep breath with my mouth right next to the resin because you usually have to do this several times.....DERRRR!!! Anyway DON'T DO THAT!

3) If you don't want to use a blow torch and you don't want to use your breath to get the bubbles out you can also try and light a match and hold it quickly over the piece and the bubbles should pop. (Sometimes a small black piece of match will fall in...you have plenty of time...just dig it out with a toothpick.)

*It seems like whatever you do...there's always a few microscopic bubbles. After you've done all you can...don't worry about it!****

After your pieces are exactly the way you want them, cover them with something making sure to leave them somewhere where no one will disturb them for 24 hours. If you've placed them on a flat pan or sturdy piece of cardboard covered with foil, move them carefully to another safe place. I use a plastic cake dome that I only use for this purpose and cover them to keep the dust off as they dry. Let them dry for 24 hours at least!

CLEAN UP
I hate to waste the cups with the measurements on them. They're made to be disposable but I still would not rather buy them again and again. I clean them out as best I can with paper towels and then wipe it clean with a cotton ball and acetone. (fingernail polish remover)

Architectual Salvage!

I made a blog entry the other day about WONDERFUL architectural salvage which you can see directly below this post!

I LOVE salvaged treasures!

The lovely and extremely talented Ms.Priscilla Moore from:

ReadBetweenLines

on Etsy was gracious enough to share some of here fabulous architectural jewels with us!

This is what she said about the items pictured below! (click on the photos for a larger view!)

"The Androgyne" was cobbled together from a beautiful, old, unburied porcelain faucet handle fixture. The valve was routed out where it had oxidized into one piece, and filled with jeweler's epoxy and gemstones. It was then captured in a wrap of steel wire and suspended from a handmade chain. Now if I could only find "cold"!

The cuff was cobbled from a Victorian drawer pull escutcheon, tinted with permanent inks, collaged with a bit of text from an antique magazine, and finished off with a nice, rough garnet and a handmade catch. All was buffed and sealed in natural beeswax for a satiny, fragrant finish.

Lucky me, both pieces have homes now, and they are not part of the woodwork!

Architectural Salvage!

I ADORE architectural salvage!

I don't know what there is about these forgotten little pieces of history but they make me weak in the knees!

Perhaps it's because, even with all their imperfections...and indeed BECAUSE of their imperfections...we love them still and they still have a purpose in our lives! Wouldn't the world be a better place if we felt that way about people??!

I'm dreaming of a PINK Christmas!

Christmas Greetings Everyone!

For the last 10 years our church has held an annual ladies Christmas dessert! They usually have about 10-15 tables and each table has one hostess who decorates the table. She chooses her own colors and can either use her own dishes OR even use paper plates and cups etc! The idea is to give each other some fun new decorating ideas that are easy and inexpensive! It's sooo much fun to look at all the wonderful ideas!

I LOVE red and green BUT whenever I am asked to do something like this where I know there will be a lot of red and green I always try and choose colors that are a little different!

I was also asked to decorate for another event (9-10 tables) a few days later so you will see photos of both!

This year I chose pink, white and silver. I think it turned out gorgeous! (the photos are not the sharpest....I was having trouble with my camera but you get the idea!)

It may look like it cost a lot of money but it DID NOT! I went to goodwill and garage sales and picked up various vintage silver plated containers. I used teapots, pitchers, an ice bucket, a sugar bowl, a small silver vase and a COOL vintage casserole dish. They ranged in price from 1.00 to about 7 or 8 dollars and they were BLACK when I bought them. I polished them up a little BUT was careful to leave a little patina for that fab shabby chic effect!

While searching for vintage silver pieces at Goodwill I also found an entire bag of silver fruit (with pink highlights no less!) for 1.99!

I used my plain white IKEA dishes but tied a pink bow around the tea cup and used some DARLING pink and white polka dot napkins I got at Target a few months ago on clearance! Tiny pink angel ornaments.....bearing the good news of Jesus' birth.....look right at home on those darling pink and white polka dots. The little angels are wooden clothespins and bits of paint and ribbon! Silver craft wedding rings form the halo (and give you something to hang it from) and I cut apart little silver poinsettia picks and used the leaves for wings.

As you know silk flowers can get sooo expensive, so I went to the dollar tree and bought white roses that did look a little tacky all on their own BUT I bought some light pink spray paint and gave them a dusting of PINK and they looked beyond gorgeous! I also found some silk poinsettia bunches for 1.00 at michaels craft store and gave them the same treatment! A few silver sparkly "squiggles" and LOTS of glitter complete the look! The entire "bunch" of squiggles cost me only 4.00 and it was enough to do about 10-12 centerpieces.

Easy FUN and cheap fall table decoration!

Fall Greetings ALL!

Since fall is UPON US I thought it would be fun to show you my most recent project that's FUN, EASY and in-expensive!

This post if rather long BUT the actual time to make one of these is Not as long as it looks! Just read thru the instructions...look at the photos and you will be able to make one in less than 1/2 hour!

The photos are first and then following the photos are the instructions. I've broken the project into two sections....the sparkly pumpkin AND the decorated cake stand SO be sure to read all the way to the bottom!

Glitzy Fall Pumpkins

Here are instructions for those cute little glitzy pumpkins. You can use artificial pumpkins if you   want to keep it from year to year or real pumpkins. I chose to use real pumpkins for today because I wanted to get all different shapes sizes and heights! I made sure the pumpkin was reasonably clean and then started on my polka dots!

Here’s what you will need:

1) A pumpkin (duh) real or artificial

2) Any type of white glue (Elmer’s)

3) Glitter….you can use any kind but I like the fine, iridescent kind available at any craft store

4) Round sponge stylists (I got mine at Michaels and they were in a pack of 3 for 2.50) You can also use your own sponge shape, make-up sponges, etc. BE CREATIVE!

5) Artificial or real leaves (optional)

6) Wire (optional)

Make a shallow little puddle of Elmer’s glue on a paper plate and dip the round sponge end of your stylist into the glue. I usually “blot it” a little on the plate just to make sure there aren’t globs of glue that might drip etc.    Pounce it up and down on the pumpkin (turning it if necessary to get an even round dot) and then sprinkle with glitter. If you didn’t get enough glue on the sponge to make a nice round circle just dip it in again! It will look bubbly ….don’t worry about that.

Sprinkle the glitter onto your glue dots making sure to have a piece of paper or newspaper underneath to catch the stray glitter. Shake the pumpkin to get rid of any extra glitter. The glitter will of course stick to the glue and when it’s dry you have an adorable, sparkly, polka dot pumpkin! I did about 3 or 4 “glue circles” and then sprinkled on the glitter so that the glue would still be wet and then did 3 or 4 more etc. until the entire pumpkin was done.   When you’re finished make the paper into a “cone” and pour the excess glitter back into its container. This may seem silly BUT you will be surprised how much glitter you waste if you don’t do this!

I also purchased some larger green leaves at Michaels and glued them on the top of the pumpkin along with some wire “squiggles” made by wrapping any type of wire around a pencil, pulling it off and playing with it until it looks all squirly!

Although I’m writing these instructions after finishing only one example I know you can also use any shape sponges you want. I think make-up sponges would be cute and would give sort of a checkerboard effect. I hope to make some striped pumpkins by using a paint brush, glue and glitter just like above. Don’t worry about your glue lines being straight….crooked is sometimes cuter anyway!

Set your pumpkin aside and start on your fall arrangement! Instructions to follow!

OK now for the cake stand!

Instructions for the Fall “cake plate” arrangement

These table decorations were fun, easy and CHEAP to create!

My motto for decorating is USE WHAT YOU HAVE! I originally wanted some little branches to put in my centerpiece but didn’t have any and found some feathers that I gathered the last time we went to pick out pumpkins (yes I am a scrounge!) and I like the effect even better!

I wanted a cake stand to “feature” my little glitzy pumpkins but they were all at least 20.00. I was at the dollar tree and noticed some glass candlesticks that looked like a base and then found some nice glass plates (again at the D-Tree!) that formed the top of the “cake plate”. You can also get glass candlesticks at garage sales for next to nothing AND you don’t have to use glass plates….Floral ones would be GORGEOUS! I used a glue called E-6000 (available at any craft store) to glue the candlestick to the bottom of the plate. It needs to dry overnight but after it’s dry it will hold almost anything. You can also use a glue called “gorilla glue” but you will have to prop the candlestick up with masking or painters tape, until it’s dry or it will slide around the plate. E-6000 is thick and will keep the base in place until it dries. TA-DA! A “crystal” cake plate for 2 bucks!

At the dollar I also purchased some fall leaves and some purple silk flowers (I like non-traditional colors) The flowers and foliage from the dollar tree will look pretty “cheesy” but trust me, when you get it all together it will look great! Then at Michaels I purchased a “bush” of orange berries and some smaller purple berries 40% off!

You don’t have to glue all the foliage down but I like knowing that it will stay where I put it so that’s what I did.

I started with the leaves and depending on what size pumpkin I was using glued a layer of leaves around the top, outside of the plate (or further in, if my pumpkin was smaller)   I peeled off the plastic “veins” that were on the back of the leaves because they lay so much better that way. After the leaves were dry I tucked in 3 or 4 sprigs of the small purple berries and then 3 or 4 of the larger purple flowers.   You can either glue your artificial pumpkin in now or just use it as a guide by placing it in the center as you check for the best placement of your foliage. Then a few of the small purple berries and then the larger orange berries, cut a little longer than everything else for a little interest. Last I put two little feathers in a few different places around the plate. I know nothing about floral arranging but I do know what looks good to me and that’s all that matters! If there were spaces that needed another little sprig or leaf I popped those in last! Like I said before I wanted some little branches but I had the feathers and I LOVE the way it turned out!   Because you first spread a circle of leaves on the plate you probably won’t see any clear spaces Use anything you have….Acorns, walnuts, real leaves or real berries. There are no rules!

After you finish your pumpkin you can glue it onto the cake plate but of course the real pumpkins just nestle in the center of the foliage.

What's it all about Alfie?

Does anyone remember that song from the 70's? (or was it the late 60's?)

Anyhoo....I'm sorta' feeling that way today. Here's why I think.

I've been listing on etsy like crazy but haven't sold anything the last few days. (I know it looks like I did but that GORGEOUS pair of earrings was actually a give-a-way!)

Anyway I've been thinking about it and wondering why I would have been so happy today if something HAD sold and because nothing did, I'm discouraged! It sorta reminds me of when I get on the bathroom scales and it looks like I've gained 2 pounds and I'm devasted BUT when I get on for the 2nd time I'm "back down" those 2 pounds and I'm happy again! WHAT THE HECK?!?!? Why am I letting a hunk of metal predict my happiness for the entire day?!?!?

What does that mean? I know we all want to succeed BUT the measure of our success should should not depend on whether or not someone else LIKES or approves of what we do!

First and Foremost our happiness and peace of mind should come from knowing that God loves us with an everlasting love. He sent His only son to die for us and has reconciled us to himself forever!

But on a more human level.....our happiness and peace of mind should come from knowing we did a good job and enjoying the process and feeling of accomplishment from a job well done!

A book I read last spring was talking about the fine line between depending on God for results BUT working hard ourselves too! We know we can't just sit back on our "you know what's" and expect God to work for us when we've put no effort into anything!

The author of this book said something to this effect. (Sorry it will have to be another loose translation!)

"Work hard as if the ENTIRE project depends on YOU, but after it's done ...let go, knowing the ENTIRE results really depend on God"

Here's my motto for the year. (I have to keep reminding myself of it!)

"Do the work BUT leave the results to God!"

DIY project using ONLY what I had on hand!

Greetings all!

I'm trying to downsize since we are empty nesters now and in the process have sort of changed my decorating style. I ended up needing quite a bit of new art for some of the areas in our home that I changed.

I did find something I really liked for our entryway but it was 150.00 at Cost Plus. I know that's not really too bad but I just didn't want to spend that, especially when I knew I could re-create it!

OK enough talk! HERE WE GO!

I found some foam core board that fit the frame I wanted to use (16" by 20") and painted it with the same color I painted my living room. It was sort of a soft warm gray but of course you can use any color you want. Don't worry about what "kind" of paint you use. Contrary to what "experts" will tell you, you CAN use house paint...indoor or outdoor, craft paint or any other water base paint you have laying around. As long as it's water base you can mix it for different colors and effects. Even if one paint is glossy and one is flat it still is ok....you'll just come up with a "semi-gloss"! (: Just make SURE they are all water based.

WORK WITH WHAT YOU HAVE!!

I took some pieces of thin plywood and cut them into appropriate sizes so that I would have 3 "tiles" across and 4 "tiles" down on my art. If you don't have a saw or plywood you can easily use foam core board for the tiles also. I ended up with 12 blank tiles that measured 4" by 4".

After you get these cut and sanded (use an exacto knife and some very fine sandpaper for the core board) I cut out 12 pieces of the same size paper from my PILES AND PILES of scrapbook paper! Don't get too hung up on what to use. If you don't have scrapbook paper use old letters or ephemera, comic strips for a child's room, a photo that has been enlarged and cut into 12 pieces etc. The skies the limit on what you can use!

Then using mod podge (a collage glue that's available at any craft store) I brushed it on the back of the papers and the front of the squares and "smooshed" it down with my hands and fingers. If you don't have any mod podge you can easily use elmers glue that has been watered down just a bit. Don't worry about getting any on the front....it dries clear and I just brushed a bit on the front after I was done gluing anyway. Even if it crinkles a little....it will just add to the dimension! You can usually flatten it out a bit when it's dry anyway.

I used some fine sandpaper to sand the edges to make them look old but of course if you want a cleaner look you don't need to do that!

I needed some "spacers" for between the background and the tiles so I found some wooden game pieces that worked perfectly! I think they were Jenga pieces so they were all the same size and width! You can use anything for spacers, bottlecaps....etc....anything that has a uniform size and thickness.

Using E-6000 (the best glue in the world!) I glued the spacers to the back of the tiles and LET THEM DRY OVERNIGHT! This glue is fabulous but it takes a while to dry so don't try and glue everything together all at once or you'll have your tiles floating around something terrible! If you want to use hot glue that will work too and then you can glue them together all at the same time!

Then I used glue on the back of the spacers (that already have the tiles glued to them) and glued them on my "background". I didn't really measure.....it doesn't end up coming out just right. Just use your eye and make sure the space between the tiles is fairly even. The space around the top and bottom doesn't really matter OR even have to be the same as each other.

I don't know about you but I LOVE antique frames! I have so many of them it's ridiculous but I keep buying more! I rarely, if ever pay more than 5.00 for one and use them all the time. I ADORE them when they're chipped and have lots of paint loss! I think they're beautiful! Some people like to repair the gesso that has come off but I like them just the way they are!

I painted this old frame with BLACK GLOSS spray paint. Gloss is all I had and I thought the finish and color gave this antique frame a newer, "hipper" look! Use any kind or color paint you have.....it all works!

When the frame is dry I mounted my finished Art into it and hung it up! PRETTY good for NO MONEY don't you think?!?!?

A DIY project for your home that's easy and CHEAP!

Greetings everyone!

I don't know about where you live but in Portland FALL IS IN THE AIR! It's almost 90 degrees today BUT there's a breeze and Autumn is UPON US!

The fall always makes we want to get my house in order and for me that means (ok cleaning but that's not fun)......I'd rather decorate, re-decorate, garage sale for treasures and transform what I buy!

I thought it might be fun to show you some of the projects I've done over the years! I will try and show you before and after pics...don't you just LOVE BEFORE AND AFTER picture?!?!? I DO!

A few months ago I was looking for a painting to go in a large area up high above my entryway. I started looking at galleries but quickly resorted to Target after I saw the prices! The cheapest thing I could find at Target...remember it's LARGE...was 150.00. I just won't spend that much on art! If I see something I want and there's NO WAY for me to re-create it, I might buy it BUT if there's any way of re-creating it I WILL FIND IT!

After I'd see some large canvas paintings I thought I might paint my own. After I saw how much large canvases cost at the art store or even Michaels I changed my mind. That's when I happened upon an large UGLY canvas that was covered with some fabric with a huge bright horse on it AT A GARAGE SALE! I have nothing against horses but this was UG-LY!! I purchased the canvas for 2.00 and went to Ikea for some unusual fabric.

I found this...and love it! I purchased it at IKEA....It was 6.99 a yard and I think I only bought 1 1/2 yards. Using a staple gun I stapled in the the back of the canvas (the wood) and didn't even bother taking off the horse fabric!

It's better to purchase a large print because you don't notice the repeat as much and it looks more like art than a piece of fabric stapled onto a canvas!

I SO WISH I had a before picture but here is the after pictures. Not bad for 12.50 HUH?!?!?!?

Now I regularly purchase any nice canvases I see at garage sales etc. You can always
PAINT OVER THEM!
STAPLE FABRIC OVER THEM!
OR
Cover them with paper and COLLAGE COLLAGE COLLAGE!

I was looking through my vintage ephemera and uncovered some FABULOUS antique milk bottle caps! I was so enthralled with them that I decided to create some rings featuring each and every antique milk bottle cap I owned!

They all have DELIGHTFUL vintage graphics in classic colors! I hope you will enjoy wearing them as much as i did making them!

Each image was carefully mounted in a wonderful (adjustable) deep bezel silver ring blank and covered with two coats of collage medium. After that was dry, I mixed two part resin and carefully poured it in. The resin magnifies the image and looks futuristic but because of the antique images still look wonderfully vintage!

There are 10 in all (see last pics) and each one is uniquely different BECAUSE they are assembled by hand. Any slight imperfections are on the original bottle cap which only add to the vintage beauty and make these truly rings that will turn heads! (ie:the staple OR the pull tab that is on the original bottle cap)

Steampunk GOTHIC CROSS brooch vintage watch parts ANTIQUE jewelery

Gothic Cross on Etsy

I started with an antiqued silver filigree and added a tiny gothic cross in the very center. The cross rises above the other treasures.....4 different "sections" around the filigree. A large gold gear with a tiny silver engraved wheel (with STARS!)from an antique watch and 3 different vintage wristwatch faces with gears behind them.

A fetching little victorian brass heart graces the bottom along with two different styles of brass chain.

This piece measures 4" (with chains) by 1 1/2" and is mounted with a jewelry quality pin back.

Each and every piece in my jewelry line has been meticulously designed and created in such a way as to last for years to come.

All finery will arrive in a handsome be-ribboned gift box making it the perfect remembrance for friends and loved ones alike.

The story behind Noble Studios Ltd. Steampunk Cameo Earrings

Happy April everyone!

I've been sharing some of my jewelry that have stories behind them and here's one of my favorites!

The earrings are made from actual antique cameos and there's a lovely story to go along with it!

"She waited by the window but was careful to conceal herself from the light as she did not want to appear too eager. But she was.....she was so in love with him that the very thought of him took her breath away. Every waking minute she spent dreaming about the time when they would be together again.

His parents did not approve of their love. Her family lived in a small cottage close to a section of London everyone called "The Gutter" and his family lived just outside the pearly gates of Halifax Park. His parents concern went unheeded as they spent many hours making secret plans for the future.

She was dressed in a breathtaking velvet evening gown that her mother had arranged to borrow from her cousin. It had yards of delicate handmade lace and layer upon layer of billowy petticoats that rustled even when she simply took a breath. Her ears were adorned with her Grandmother's antique cameos and she felt like a queen. He was dark and handsome and she could only imagine how every eye would be upon them as they floated into the Grand Magna Opera House.

This was the very first time she had been invited to such a lavish and magnificent place but she had no fear, as she would be with him.

As she stood there waiting for him in the shadows of her humble home she couldn't help but wonder if tonight would be the night that her life would change forever."

Here's a fun piece that inspired the following story snippet!

"He was just a lowly sailor but he loved everything about it. The salty sea air, the mighty, unpredictable ocean blue and even the back breaking hard work. As he stood on the bow of his ship he wished he could stay here forever but they had just pulled into the dock at Steamworks Port and all the men were expected to go ashore.

Just as he turned to go he saw her. She was exquisite.her voluptuous body glistened with the salty sea and her lovely long hair bobbed gently on the surface of the water. Her iridescent scales displayed a play of lustrous colors like those of the rainbow and were blindingly ablaze in the summer sun. Just for a moment their eyes met but then she was gone, just as quickly as she had appeared, the last tip of her shimmering tail disappearing into the sea. She was glorious, captivating, bewitching but sadly unattainable. Yet, he had not a doubt that she would be in this lowly sailor’s dreams tonight.

Little Violette and her "to do" list

Here's another jewelry design that inspired a little story snippet! Is there anything cuter than an acorn? I DON'T THINK SO....

"It was a crisp autumn day and she sat under the old oak tree that was close to overtaking their backyard. She visited her mighty friend every day no matter what the weather. It was HER place and somewhere she could be herself completely. She had gathered enough acorns to make little hats for her tiniest dolls, made the perfect daisy crown (after ruining 3 others) and arranged a row of 17 of the prettiest leaves she could find.

She decided they needed names. The red ones she named….crimson, burgundy, garnet, russet, bittersweet and ruby. The yellow ones she named….sunshine, lemon, saffron, amber and buttercup. The orange ones, since they were pretty much all the same color (and she was tired) she decided to name “orange”. The last thing on her list was to gaze up through the branches of the massive tree and watch the light from the sun, dance to and fro with every breeze."

Antique Grape Spoon Necklace with GORGEOUS purple glass beads

Here's another fun piece that features an antique grape spoon AND a fun story!

"The grapes in her vineyard were calling to her. She knew they were plump, succulent and ripe for the harvest.

She had always been charmed by autumn. She would gather the clusters of ripe and luscious fruit and enjoy its bounty all winter long. Freshly picked they added a deep, dark amethyst color and unmistakable flavor to the ambrosia that her family had come to expect each and every fall. Jams and jellies that made her childrens morning bread and butter a thing of beauty. Large, fat raisins, when combined with egg yolks, brown sugar, freshly ground spices and her homemade sour cream made the most heavenly pie imaginable. Wines and cordials that she shared only with the husband that she loved so dearly. It warmed the cockles of their hearts on those long, cold winter nights.

No matter what the coming year might bring she knew she could always count on the time when those lovely, luscious orbs from God would brighten the long winter ahead."

Antique Grape Spoon Necklace on Etsy.

This amazing necklace began with an authentic antique child’s spoon with a vivid grape design stamped onto the handle and neck of the spoon. A “cluster” of vintage glass beads were mounted securely in the spoon since I filled it a little too full, they are dripping down out of the spoon.

The spoon was carefully drilled and a vintage chain with toggle clasp was added. The chain measures 23” long but can be adjusted to any length. The spoon itself measures 4” and the “dripping grapes” add another 2”.

The baubles were wire wrapped to add extra durability and each glass bead was strung with teensy tiny wheels from antique pocket watches.

This is truly a one of kind piece that will make your friends swoon when they see you wearing it.

Prince the Mighty Bull Dog!

Greetings!

I thought it might be fun to share some of my jewelry pieces that inspired me to write tiny story "snippets"!

"Prince pricked his ears at the slightest sound or movement. He was the best guard dog The Melbourne Estate had ever had and he knew it. Whether it was a rustling leaf, a passing animal or a person who didn’t belong there, (which in his mind was everyone) he barked his low grizzly bark to let Lord and Lady Melbourne know of each and every occasion of possible impending doom.

He was a just a small bull dog but apparently he didn’t know that. He thought he was the biggest, baddest dog that ever roamed the earth and he was pretty sure that every creature in all of London was afraid of him. Once his masters had been alerted and danger had once again been averted, he settled back into his regal dog house directly inside the front gates of the estate waiting for the next time duty would undoubtedly call him name again."

Authentic Antique Brass Jewelry

Greetings all!

Since we've been talking about brass the last few days and how to make it look wonderfully "antique" I thought you might enjoy seeing some of my jewelry that I made using authentic antique brass pieces that I was very lucky to find!

The necklace below, was one of my very favorites and began with a very large antique brass finding and a plate from an antique pocket watch! Vintage wristwatch cases and an antique rhinestone piece complete this lovely piece!

This Steampunk Brooch below, began life as an antique back of a drawer pull! I added a shimmering 1920's watch face and gears from an antique pocket watch. A jewelry quality pin back is mounted securely.

This wildly enticing necklace began with an antique brass piece with WONDERFUL natural verdi gris patina! I added an antiqued brass beetle, a vintage watch movement and other fun bits and bobs!

The earrings below are made from antique brass buttons, antiqued brass settings and gears from antique pocket watches.

Another necklace that began life as a back plate from drawer. I added a brass bee and some other red and green accents.

How to oxidize your brass AND MORE part 2

I hope you enjoyed my little tutorial yesterday on oxidizing raw brass with ONLY AN OVEN!

I’d also like to share with a couple of wonderful sites that sell raw brass for a very good price and a few tips for working with brass! The sites below give you a better price the more you order but none of them are wholesale only....which is good because most of the time we don't need 1000 of something!

Some of them use the original antique machines so it’s very difficult to tell the antique pieces from the new pieces, especially after you’ve given them that lovely vintage patina!

Along the way I will also be showing you some of the pieces I've created using these fab antiqued brass pieces! ALL of the photos today combine new brass pieces that I antiqued and antique or vintage pieces! Don't they look wonderful together?

I used to order all my raw brass from Fancifuls but I noticed the last time I ordered from them they had gotten pretty expensive. Compare prices and see which works best for you. There are a lot of suppliers that sell raw brass on ETSY in smaller amounts and believe it or not they may be the least expensive route to go.

Fancifuls always get back to you right away and are very easy to work with about shipping etc.

If I recall correctly you have to order quite a bit from them for a good price AND they don't have an online catalog (last time I checked) but they will send you a catalog if you are interested and they have just about every design you can imagine. This company has been in business for YEARS and a good portion of the designs are created from the antique machines.

They are a fairly large company and take a while to get back to you but they are very nice and will work with you also.

A few more TIPS!!

1) If you find a piece you’d love to use as a charm but it doesn’t have a ring you can just drill a tiny hole in it and attach it with a jump ring. The brass is fairly soft and drilling it with an electric drill and tiny drill bit is easy. It might need just a tiny bit of filing if there are rough edges.

2) If you have a piece that DOES have a ring and you don't want it....just clip it off with jewelry clippers and file down the rough edges. You can also bend it off by holding onto the ring with a small pair of jewelry pliers, hold the other part of the piece with another pair of pliers and bend back and forth till it breaks off. You might still need to file it a bit. (Michaels has a set of jewelry tools for about 10.00. They might not be the best quality ever but they are fine for the hobbyist. If you don't have any files an emery board will work ok too. I get mine in a big bunch at the dollar tree)

3) I know others will disagree with me but the best glue to use if you are going to attach brass to brass is E6000. It is very strong after it dries overnight but very flexible so that if you knock your piece against something it won't "snap" off like with epoxy or super glues. I like it too because if you get some, somewhere on your piece that you didn't plan on (HAPPENS TO ME EVERY TIME because it is quite goopy....use a toothpick to apply it!) then you can just wait about 15 minutes and it peels right off! When it dries overnight though..it takes a lot of muscle to pry it off.

How to oxidize RAW BRASS using something EVERYONE has in their own kitchen!

I had plans last night to breeze through this tutorial almost feeling embarrassed about how easy this was but I decided to follow my own steps with some actual raw brass this morning to see where it lead me! The results were really quite amazing. Read my directions and then look at the pictures for the results! Even though I was so tempted to substitute my “perfect ones” for the “after” pictures I decided to show you exactly how mine turned out today! I really learned a lot and it was FUN!

I wrote the tutorial last night and my notes after doing it myself this morning, will look like this....**SIDE NOTE

OK here we go!

I’ve tried EVERYTHING to oxidize my raw brass to give it that captivating vintage patina and everything I tried was toxic, didn’t perform very well, was too expensive or was just too time consuming.

One day I was in my kitchen trying for the million-th time to think of something that would work and I thought…I wonder what would happen if I “burned them”. I think I’d seen somewhere that you could use a blow torch (you know that blow torch that you have laying around….) to make your brass dark.

So since my blow torch was in the shop, I decided to put it in my oven on its highest heat (500 degrees for mine) and give that a try and guess what? It worked!

Here’s what I’ve found works the best. LIGHTLY buff the pieces with fine steel wool and drop them into some water with about 1 Tablespoon of salt in it. This is just to remove the surface dirt and oils. Rinse them WELL in warm water and let them dry. Then just lay each piece, face up, on a cookie sheet covered with tin foil.

Here's what they look like before you start!

Then put them in the oven and “bake” them for between 15 minutes and 1 hour. There really is no rhyme or reason why it takes 15 minutes some days and 1 hour other days but just check them every few minutes and pull them out when you’re happy with the color. SIDE NOTE: as they begin to turn you might have to check them every few SECONDS You do have to watch them carefully because when they start to turn dark it goes pretty quickly. I usually do it when I’m in the kitchen doing something else anyway, so that I don’t forget them.

When they’ve reached the desired color just pull them out and plunge them into cold water to stop the process…careful they are HOT! SIDE NOTE: I DID NOT put the large blue heart in cold water immediately when it came out of the oven and even though the blue color was just starting to appear it turned that GORGEOUS blue right before my very eyes!
Here's what mine looked like right after they came out of the oven and had cooled...I KNOW the large heart is not there but that will be a little later!

See how different they all look? In my mind the little "love bird" connector and the dragonfly turned out the best but that's just me. I don't think the others turned out that great but I did promise I would show you how they REALLY turned out! Don't worry though....they aren't done yet!

Here's what they looked like after I buffed them a bit with steel wool. You can do it as little or as much as you like, depending on how "antique" you want your brass to look! (don't worry....the large ornate hearts are STILL TO COME!)

Sometimes they turn almost purple, which I love and one time they turned a beautiful turquoise color. I haven’t been able to reproduce that since (until this morning!) but it’s fun to see which way the heat makes them go each time. Sometimes there are places on the brass that are darker than others or little dots of color which looks GREAT! Brass doesn’t naturally oxidize perfectly anyway so this gives it an authentic appearance!SIDE NOTE: The other day I forgot to clean them OR put them in salt water and then left them in for way too long BUT they were fine. I don’t think they would have turned out very well IF I had cleaned them SO you’ll need to experiment*

If they get too dark or turn a weird color (which they have for me!) all you have to do is dip them in tarn-x and they turn BRIGHT gold again and you can repeat the process. Make sure you wash them well after you use the tarn-x. SIDE NOTE: I found this morning that the ones I had dipped into tarn-x and tried to “re-bake” didn’t oxidize very well SO try and get it right the first time. If you don’t though….it just takes a little longer and you might end up with a color that wasn’t what you intended BUT that’s all part of the process!***********

OK NOW for those hearts! Remember what it looked like before I started?

I decided just for fun to do three and look how they turned out....DRUM ROLL PLEASE~

Can you belive the variations? I couldn't! I've never seen one turn blue like that but I rather like it. It's a little too instense for me but I can see how it could look smashing!

NOW look at them after I buffed them a little bit with steel wool!

This last picture is of the intense blue heart which I buffed quite a bit and would be how I would like it and would use it!

Up for your approval today an WILDLY AMUSING steampunk ring that began life as a "mechanical" brass beetle. He has been fitted with wheels and a tiny screw from an antique pocket watch AND antiqued brass wings so he can FLY!

He's been securely mounted to an ornate antiqued ring base and I think he's loads of FUN! His wing span is 1 1/2" and he is about 1" tall. I positioned the end of the wings in an "up" position to make it more comfortable to wear.

The filigree is very easily adjusted for your finger size.

The brass findings I use are still being produced using the same...now antique...machines they used so many years ago and the enterprise is still owned by the family that originated it. I oxidize them by hand and polish them so that just a little of the original brass shows through. This gives them that PERFECT vintage patina.

This amazing brooch began with an authentic antique child’s spoon with a vivid grape design stamped onto the handle and neck of the spoon. A “cluster” of vintage glass beads were mounted securely in the spoon since I filled it a little too full, they are dripping down out of the spoon.

The spoon was carefully drilled and a vintage chain with toggle clasp was added. The chain measures 23” long but can be adjusted to any length. The spoon itself measures 4” and the “dripping grapes” add another 2”.

The baubles were wire wrapped to add extra durability and each glass bead was strung with teensy tiny wheels from antique pocket watches.

This is truly a one of kind piece that will make your friends swoon when they see you wearing it.

He was a just a small bull dog but apparently he didn’t know that. He thought he was the biggest, baddest dog that ever roamed the earth and he was pretty sure that every creature in all of London was afraid of him. Once his masters had been alerted and danger had once again been averted, he settled back into his regal dog house directly inside the front gates of the estate waiting for the next time duty would undoubtedly call him name again."

He was just a lowly sailor but he loved everything about it. The salty sea air, the mighty, unpredictable ocean blue and even the back breaking hard work. As he stood on the bow of his ship he wished he could stay here forever but they had just pulled into the dock at Steamworks Port and all the men were expected to go ashore.

Just as he turned to go he saw her. She was exquisite….her voluptuous body glistened with the salty sea and her lovely long hair bobbed gently on the surface of the water. Her iridescent scales displayed a play of lustrous colors like those of the rainbow and were blindingly ablaze in the summer sun. Just for a moment their eyes met but then she was gone, just as quickly as she had appeared, the last tip of her shimmering tail disappearing into the sea. She was glorious, captivating, bewitching but sadly unattainable. Yet, he had not a doubt that she would be in this lowly sailor’s dreams tonight.

It had happened again…she had locked herself out and stood on the porch of the little cottage she called home, wondering what to do next. She hated asking for help. She wanted to be independent but so many times she felt locked within her own weaknesses. She loved helping others so maybe it was pride that kept her from asking for help.

"She waited by the window but was careful to conceal herself from the light as she did not want to appear too eager. But she was.....she was so in love with him that the very thought of him took her breath away. Every waking minute she spent dreaming about the time when they would be together again.

His parents did not approve of their love. Her family lived in a small cottage close to a section of London everyone called "The Gutter" and his family lived just outside the pearly gates of Halifax Park. His parents concern went unheeded as they spent many hours making secret plans for the future.

She was dressed in a breathtaking velvet evening gown that her mother had arranged to borrow from her cousin. It had yards of delicate handmade lace and layer upon layer of billowy petticoats that rustled even when she simply took a breath. Her ears were adorned with her Grandmother's antique cameos and she felt like a queen. He was dark and handsome and she could only imagine how every eye would be upon them as they floated into the Grand Magna Opera House.

This was the very first time she had been invited to such a lavish and magnificent place but she had no fear, as she would be with him.

As she stood there waiting for him in the shadows of her humble home she couldn't help but wonder if tonight would be the night that her life would change forever."

The spider artwork was created by me and tiny versions of these watercolors were printed and inserted into a silver bezel. After they were sealed they will filled with a glass like resin and they hang on a lovely 24" silver snake chain!

There are 3 different sizes and styles of the spider pendant.

One is about 1" in diameter and sits in a simple silver bezel.

The next is a little smaller but sits in an ornate silver bezel.

The last one is in the same ornate bezel but is square.
